Photo Competition - Fancy Starring on the Website?

Ever wondered who the swimmer is on the Sharks website banner? Well, we don't know either - it's just a stock photo we used.

We would like to feature images of actual Sharks swimmers on our website, so dig yours out and submit them to our competition. The competition is only open to registered users of saSharks.com each of whom can submit up to three photos.

We'll be looking for interesting shots which capture swimming for Sharks. Entry forms, including uploading the image file(s) can be found on your mysharks home page. The deadline for submissions is March 11th 2012. After the deadline we'll select just 12 to be voted on by members. The 6 most popular will be used for at least the next 12 months randomly placed on every page header.

Coach Rob's 'Tip of The Month' for February 2012

Time trialsThis month I would like to reinforce technique in Butterfly. This month I have found a very good video below does a really good job of showing a streamlined butterfly stroke with crisp timing of breathing and kicking.

Remember, even if you don't favour butterfly as a primary stroke good techinique in it
will help you bring down your IM times.

Members registered with mySharks can now check their gala points allocations on-line when logged in to mysharks.

Total points earned and a breakdown of qualifying meets can be found in the Ladders & Pts menu.

With a full calender for 2012 there's plenty of opportunity to get Gala points. And you only need to swim at 10 meets to get your first award at 50 points. Who will be first? Remember, once awarded Gala points are forever. Unlike sprintladder points they are perpetual and never reset to zero.

Sharks Open Pocklington Account with a Creditable Third Place. Updated

Full results for our first League outing for 2012 are now in. A quick update on Sharks return to the challenging Pocklington League.

Round 1 saw Sharks board a bus for the trip to Bridlington where we were up against strong competition from South Hunsley, Pocklington Dolphins and our neighbours Rossington Rascals.

In the end we finished third but we were only 2 points behind Pocklington in 2nd and 16 points behind the winning club South Hunsley. Rossington finished on 90 points. We'll get the full results to you as soon as possible and we can then look to see where we can get those extra points next time. Well done to all. A great result. Full results are here

Charlie Flatters was in the squasd and has kindly submitted this swimmers view of the trip:

The first league gala of the year was located at Bridlington, therefore a long drive. The whole team travelled down on a coach, all in Sharks hoodies and t-shirts dressed to impress. Gathering up team spirit on the coach by singing and having a laugh we made it to the swimming pool. After waiting only a few minutes we were all getting changed.

Walking onto pool side with are Sharks tattoos we were looking like a pretty cool team, ready to swim. A quick warm up lead by the captains got us all ready to race. And after another 15 minute warm up in pool we were soon cheering each other on in the team relay and individual races, competing against other swimming clubs. Everyone racing against their own age, but in some cases people had to swim up an age group because there simply were not enough swimmers in that group, so they stepped up to the mark and swam really well against older swimmers. Both girls and boys cheering and chanting for their team mates to win the race.

We were the loudest team there! Roll on round two!

The next round is a bit closer to home at Rossington on 19th May.

First Result for 2012 is a Cracker - Records & PB's Galore.

We now have our first result for 2012. If this is anything to go by 2012 is going to be a terrific year.

At the Rotherham Metro Long Course A/B meet at Ponds Forge no less than 24 Club records were set and 55 PB's swam. Many new records where created as this was one of the rare Long Course meets Sharks attends. Of course, if Sharks want to realise their ambition to get to the Yorkshire Championships and beyond then Long Course experience is essential.

This meet also sees the first distribution of Gala Points, our new rewards system for Sharks swimmers. Remember Swims Mean Points Mean Prizes!

Well done to the squad. A fantastic result. Check them out here >>.

Gala Points have Landed. Earn Reward for Swimming for Sharks

The sprint ladder serves us well and rewards swimmers for PB's plus a little extra for turning up. We would like to encourage more swimmers to enter more events.

In comes Gala Points! Every time you swim for sharks or at a Sharks event like Club Championships you gain 5 points. Special rewards will be given when you reach 50, 100, 200 points and so on. Points are never lost and accumulate all through your career at Sharks.

The scheme starts with last weekends Rotherham Metro meet at Ponds Forge.

You can keep track of your points in mySharks so if you are not registered,  do it now.

Sharks Temporary Tattoos have Arrived.

Head Coach Rob has secured our first batch of Club Temporary Tattoos.

Easy to apply and remove they are nevertheless sturdy enough to wear a meets and show your dedication to Sharks.

They are about 35mm square and can be bought from Rob at 60p each or 2 for £1.

Perfect for their first outing at our Pocklington League fixture at Bridlington this weekend. Give them a go.

Want to make it in Swimming? Something you must read.

If you've been swimming for any time and have ambitions you will know it's a sport like few others. All sports require dedication and effort to do well but swimming asks more of younger competitors than almost any other sport.

To help swimmers and parents begin understand swimming in the UK and the possible roadmaps for swimmers of varying ability and ambition the ASA have produced a very useful document - 'Success is Long Term'. If you are at all interested in getting the best out of swimming you should Read it here.

It neatly summarises key aspects of the ASA Long Term Development Plan which drives the demands made on swimmers in the UK in order to achieve great things.

Further Website Improvements to come in 2012 - Get Registered

Time trialsThe end of 2011 saw the start of a major overhaul of the Sharks Website - most important of which was the introduction of individual member logins. So a must for all members in 2012 is to

Know your Committtee. New Committee Members elected at AGM

Time trialsNo club as successful as Sharks can achieve anything without the hard work of many, often in the background. At the recent Sharks AGM the committee was refreshed and we have a new Chairman. Peter Smith, the previous chair who has done a sterling job in the last few years, has moved to Vice Chair and Tim Jackson is our new supremo.

Many familiar faces have swopped roles and a few new faces join the committee. The committee page on this site has been updated - although we await some photos. Take a look so you can recognise them at the pool. Feel free to discuss any aspect of the club with them and maybe even thank them occasionally. Without them there would be no Sharks.    View Committee >>

Last Results of 2011 are in - Barnsley Christmas Sprint Meet

Time trialsWith the publication of the Results from the Borough of Barnsley Christmas Meet we see out 2011 with a bang. With a masive 32 PB's swum by just 13 swimmers.

What will 2012 bring?

Your Head Coach, Robert Crofts finished 2011 with a strong work ethic for everyone and will no doubt want you all to work even harder next year and achieve great things in the pool.

There's a pretty full calendar for the coming year. Don't forget to check it out and note your own target meets. Set some targets and let's get as many of you as possible to the Yorkshire County Championships.    View 2012 Fixtures>>

DMasa Offers Free ASA Judge Level 1 Course - Perfect for Parents.

Time trialsDMasa, the umbrella for swimming in Doncaster, is offering free places to member clubs, including Sharks, on an ASA Judge Level 1 course.

This course is perfect for Parents and supporters who would like to get a little bit more involved and give back something to the club. Level 1 covers Timekeeping and Turn Judging - a very useful skill set to us as we are always required to provide these at galas and league fixtures.

The course takes little time, with just one initial classroom session on theory and then the remainder can be completed at the candidates own pace on poolside at one or more official meets.

Please consider this course and help out. If you are interested then hope over to the DMasa website or email Julie Hirst at jahirst@btinternet.com.

Masters show how it's done at South Yorkshire Championships.

Time trialsOK, so you wondered if those Master swimmers who mysteriously come and go at training session were actually any good? 10 of them sauntered over to Ponds Forge for the South Yorkshire Championships last weekend and came away with a host of medals and PB's.

Top of the table was Alison Pennell with 5 Golds and 2 Silvers, closely followed by Brother Jonathan with 3 Silvers and a Bronze. Amongst the squad was none other than Kevin Dunne, previously Head Coach at Sharks, who PB's all but one of his 6 events. Well done folks!     See Results >>

SharksDB Updated with 2012 Yorkshire Qualifying times

Time trials Time trialsYorkshire Swimming have issued details of the 2012 Yorkshire Championships including their latest qualifying times. These have been updated into the SharksDB and you can check your own personal bests against these times.

Full details of the championships can be found on the Yorkshire Swimming Website. Note the times published are shown to one decimal place but times up to, but not including, the next 10th of a second are accepted. This is allowed for in SharksDB.

The age groups for the yorkshires have changed this last year. There is no reference to age group, junior or senior. Instead ages are 9,10,11,12,13,14/15 and Open for boys and 9,10,11,12,13,14/15 and Open for girls. Note there are no longer 100m swims for 10 year olds girls and 10 and 11 year old boys.

Both the QT's page and progress graphs have been updated to use the new times and age groups.

A Message from your Head Coach regarding the Hayleigh Dunne Memorial

Time trialsTime trialsI would like to thank each and every swimmer who swam at the Hayleigh Dunne Memorial Gala.

I felt the gala went very well with everybody swimming brilliantly. Kevin, Hayleigh's father, did take time to speak to Sharks to say he thought the gala far exceeded his expectations, so thank you to you all; you have made him very proud.

It was my intention was to use the whole club as Kev wanted to see everybody swim and catch up with as many of you as possible. In order to do this I decided to field two teams, giving more people more swims. However, the nature of the gala and the abundance of swimmers we have in some age groups meant I could only give one or two swims to some of you. For this I do apologise. This was a gala like no other and we can all be proud of the support we showed to Kev and the aim of the Gala to commemorate a very special person.

Once again thank you all for your support and time.

Inaugural Hayleigh Dunne Memorial Gala Packs them in at Gainsborough

Time trialsNever has West Lindsey Swimming Pool been so full and so noisey!

A big Thank you to all who joined us to celebrate the life of Hayleigh, especially those from Gainsborough Dolphins, Armthorpe and Lincoln Pentaqua. The novel format for the Gala, based in Hayleigh's favourite strokes went down well with the swimmers and some really good races were won and lost on the touch. Few will forget the crescendo of noise as the last event, a 16 length cannon closed the occasion.

See you all next year as we bid to remember Hayleigh and her unbridled enthusiasm for the sport she loved.

Sharks in the Press Again - aftger Success at the Dukeries Open

Time trialsLong course meets are sparse on the Sharks Calendar but the success at the recent Dukeries meet suggests the challenge of a longer pool (and fewer turns) is not feared by Sharks.

This success was not missed by the local press either, Click on the image (left) to see what they had to say about our fantastic swimmers.

Sharks join Rotary Club and Epworth Pool for Sponsored Swim

Time trialsSouth Axholme Sharks, Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club and Epworth Swimming Pool are holding a sponsored swim on 20 November 2011.

Teams of four are invited to participate and should register straight away by printing off the form from the Rotary website www.rotaryclubofepworth.org.

Each team will be allocated a 15 minute slot during the day and should complete as many lengths as possible in the time allowed.

Trophies will be awarded for fastest individuals, fastest teams and also teams and individuals who succeed in raising the most sponsorship.

The swim is in aid of the World Swim Against Malaria Foundation and Lindsey Lodge Hospice

SharksDB Can Now Show True PB's for Swimmers entering Non-Sharks Meets

Time trialsFor those of you swimming in Meets not on the Sharks Calender you can now add record of your swims to SharksDB and therefore get your true PB's reflected in the Database.

Although the Sharks Calender is pretty full for swimmers chasing a qualifying time or swimming with dual club status (e.g. Dartes swimmers) it's quite possible that your PB's on the Sharks site are not your true PB's. We have now added capability to SharksDB to record these swims without affecting sprint ladders and club records.

If you do swim outside the Dartes Calender simply send your results (along with a copy of the official results file/sheets) to Claire Windle and she will add them to the database. Any swims added in this way will not earn club records or sprintladder points.

Head Coach Robert Crofts will be able to see your swims and true PB's for team selection and to make sure he knows your actuial performance level.

New Sprint Ladders Launch 1st September

Time trialsSharks Sprint Ladders are being reset following the Dukeries Meet and the first points on the new ladders will be awarded at Lincs Junior League fixture on 10th September.

Coach Rob's September 'Tip of The Month'

Time trialsEvery Session, Every Club, Every Coach - always the same message kick, kick, kick. And there's good reason. Watch any major competition on TV and those amazing underwatrer shots show you just what a good strong butterfly kick can do. Many Gold Medals have been won and lost on those all important kicks at the start and off turns.

Sharks Merchandise Shop Now Open - Order Forms Available On-line.

Time trialsTime trialsAt long last we have a new merchandise supplier and our new items are now available to order.

Thank you for bearing with us over the last couple of months while we have been sourcing a new supplier for Sharks merchandise. This took longer than expected so apologies for any inconvenience caused. We have worked hard to secure a reliable source of quality products which offer excellent value for money.

New Order forms are now available on-line and at the pool. A new permanent sharksSHOP link to the order form has been added to our home page.

Coach Rob's August 'Tip of The Month'

Time trialsThis month I want to give some pointers to more effective training and am adding links to two new documents.

The first one is a good training protocol for when you are in the water and what to bring to each session. The second contains 10 simple stretching exercises that are a MUST for all Mako and Great White swimmers.

These simple rules will allow both you and your training buddies to get the most out of your training. Check them out here

Records Keep Tumbling at Summer Club Champs Galas 2 & 3

Time trialsTime trials8 Club and 19 Championship records were broken over the two summer club championships. Prime culprits were Jessica Gillatt and Natasha Crow with 5 records each. Other record breakers were Tilly Arrand, Finleigh Dukes, Lucy Goodwin, Katy Bradock, Lucy Hame, Shane Thackery, Christian Warbouys, Bridie Smith and Matthew Baldwin.

Continued breaking of records is an indication of continuing improvement and performance which is the aim of all competitive clubs and a prime measure of success.

However, improved records is not the full story from Club Champs. Although they are a headline they can obscure fantastic improvements throughout the club. Over the two galas a total of 242 personal bests were swum including 89 first time swims. Those of you who were there could not have failed to be impressed by the sheer guts of some of our less experienced swimmers. Who will forget a swimmer who, in her first ever competitive 200m freestyle, clearly struggled with breathing patterns from about 75 metres in, stopped many times but unbelievably kept trying again and again and finished the full 200m! Few could say they could muster the same level of courage and determination.

Whilst recently stepped down as Head Coach, Kevin Dunne, will be very pleased with everyone's efforts over the last two weekends. What a great tribute to his reign as Head Coach.

Coach Rob's 'Tip of The Month'

Time trialsThere is a wealth of useful imformation for the competitive or enthusiastic swimmer on the web - beyond your excellent club website, that is.

Coach Rob
will be finding some of the best for you and posting them here. Take a look at them when they pop up. You will find they will support and emphasize drills and skills the coaching team at Epworth are getting you to do.

This month it's all about freestyle catch and throw. Click on the image to left and watch the video. It explains both really well. Then use that knowledge in the pool.

The video is hosted by the Swimming World website and their excellent Morning Swim TV Show. Take a look around - if you are into swimming at all, you will find it an excellent resource.

Log Books now Mandatory for Makos and Great Whites Swimmers

Time trialsStepping in to head up the coaching team following Kevin Dunne's departure, Rob Crofts would like all Makos and Great White Swimmers to start completing log books again. Kevin Dunne Steps Down as Head Coach with Immediate Effect.

Time trialsKevin Dunne has decided to step down as Head Coach of South Axholme Sharks with immediate effect. The past few months have been very difficult for Kev after losing his daughter Hayleigh in a tragic car accident. Understandably, Kev feels he needs to take a long break from Sharks and concentrate on spending more time with his family.

We would like to thank Kev for all his hard work, commitment and dedication to Sharks over the past two years and hope he will stay involved with Sharks in some way.

Kev has actually been the Head Coach of Sharks on two occassions having previously been involved in the early years and being at the centre of the development of Sharks into a successful, competitive club more than capable of holding it's own in local leagues and popular open meets. Many swimmers trained by Kev have gone on to succeed at county, regional and national level. Kev has a terrific combination of knowledge and enthusiasm which seems inspiring to young swimmers, encouraging them to challenge themselves and progress to greater levels of achievement.

A club is rarely about just one person but for much of Sharks history Kev has been a mainstay. Kev will be missed and is assured a more than friendly welcome at the pool at any time.

Samantha Cooks Shows What can be Achieved as a Sharks Swimmer-County and Regional Finalist 100m Backstroke

Time trials
Now reported in the Epworth Bells - read it here

Back in February In Gala 1 of the Yorkshire Championships Sharks swimmer Samantha Cook had a brilliant swim by finishing 7th in the final of the girls 11yrs 100 Backstroke in a time of 1.21.90 which was inside the 1.22 qualifying time for the NER Regional Championships. Sam does all her training with Sharks in Epworths 20m pool - think about it - making the top 10 alongside swimmers from the likes of Leeds, Sheffield, Borough of Kirklees and, of course, Doncaster Dartes.

Last weekend she added another notch to her belt and finalled in the same event at the North East Region BAGCATS Championships at Ponds Forge. With more than 2 seconds improvement in her time of 1:19.45s she qualified 6th fastest in one of the most competitive regions in the country. Her final time of 1:20.48s brought her home in 8th place - in a regional final!

This was a great personal achievement for Sam and a fantastic effort from a South Axholme Sharks Swimmer

As a feeder club to Doncaster Dartes we encourage the very best of our swimmers to consider moving up to the elite club. Swimming however, is a very demanding sport at that level and whilst the rewards are great the committment is not for everyone. Sam shows that deciding not to swim with Dartes should not dampen ambition and that determination and consistent effort in the pool at Epworth brings its own rewards. Well done Sam. We are so proud of you!

Time trialsIt was always going to be a hard task beating Adwick and Armthorpe at the Bridon Shield Team Championships but we had a 3rd Place firmly in our sights.
